Girl from Nowhere is a Thai thriller/horror anthology series created by studio SOUR. Easy to find on Netflix and with a series of promo images highlighting the mainly school-based contexts and characters, it seems we have another campy series that the platform tends to milk for cash. However, Girl from Nowhere has an undeniable charm even when it could be terrible and clichéd. Against all odds, I binge-watched its two seasons in a few weeks and finally overcame the horror-genre slump I was suffering from.
The show’s formula is quite simple. Everything starts with Nanno entering a new school every episode. She’s pretty, mysterious, and quite frankly, she rocks her bob. For better or for worse, inevitably she will lure those around her into committing (or admitting) abject actions. The catch is that Nanno is not evil per se; while she has some supernatural advantage up her sleeve, she just brings out the darkness inside the ones she interacts with. No matter if it’s a teacher, a supposedly nice guy, or girl, Nanno is a true neutral force that will smile while humans show their inner demons. Sometimes you get an episode full of drama, sometimes you get pure dark humor, or sometimes you just get a bloody mess, but Nanno will always be the catalyst for someone’s downfall by their own petty desires.
I have to say that almost all the credit for the show goes to Chicha “Kitty” Amatayakul. You can tell she did her research and had her potential audience in mind while working on her character gestures and traits. It’s not difficult to imagine Nanno as a distant relative of Tomie or Enma Ai from “Hell Girl.” Still, while she gets the evil laugh and chaotic stoicism of both, she adds a sassiness that makes her unique among them. I can’t get enough of this show, and I can’t wait to see more of Nanno in a new season, above all, when the writers knew how to spice things up at the end of each season.
No more spoilers from me! Just go ahead and find this little gem in the usual dumpster fire that is Netflix’s horror/thriller catalogue and enjoy some sweet, sweet karma coming the way of those who deserve it.
Girl from Nowhere is an unexpectedly fantastic series which I can’t recommend enough, and anybody who’s missed this hidden gem must absolutely see it.
